Job Description

The Mineral Deposit Research Unit in the Department of Earth and Ocean Sciences at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a Research Associate to lead a new research project in Geometallurgy. This position will provide scientific and logistical leadership to achieve a wide range of project objectives which include the construction of 3D geometallurgical models, supervision of graduate students, extensive industry interactions and training, and international-level research outputs. The candidate must demonstrate a high level of geological knowledge relating to mineral exploration and resource modeling objectives. Specific knowledge of hydrothermal mineral deposit formation and ore fluid chemistry are required.

Minimum Requirements: The ideal candidate will have a Ph.D. in geology with a specialty in economic geology. In addition, the candidate will have at least three years of post-doctoral experience in geometallurgy and analytical mineral geochemistry, and at least one year of project management experience. Expertise in analytical geochemistry with hands-on experience using QEMSCAN, MLA, EMPA, XRD and LA-rCP-MS, as well as excellent petrography skills, are required. The candidate will also require computing skills and experience building 3D models, and will be adept at writing and presenting results in reports, oral presentations and at scientific conferences. Extended periods of time will be spent in remote and rugged field locations.

The appointment will be for one year, starting December 2011. An extension may be possible but is dependent on funding being obtained. The salary will depend on the candidate’s experience and expertise; the minimum stipend for a Research Associate I as of July 1st, 2009 is $51,140.82 CDN per year.
