Overall Purpose of the Job
A priority objective for Centerra is to grow the company through exploration and the acquisition of advanced gold opportunities in Asia and other emerging markets. To achieve this objective will require the dedicated effort of an economic geologist with international experience based out of an exploration office in the region. Responsibilities will largely include identifying and evaluating advanced exploration / mining opportunities, initiating and supervising detailed and generative exploration programs, and making suitable presentations and recommendations to management. The priority of this position is to develop opportunities for new resources to meet the needs and growth plans of Centerra. The incumbent will be responsible for the management of multiple projects and joint ventures and must ensure compliance in accordance with the companys practices and policies. The incumbent will also be part of the team to complete the assessment, due diligence and make recommendations on M&A opportunities in the region. This position reports to the VP Exploration for Centerra Gold, Toronto.
Detailed Job Responsibilities
1) Technical This position requires the incumbent to be knowledgeable of worldwide gold deposits, particularly in Asia. Area of responsibility will be in Asia, specific areas and countries to be determined.
The incumbent must be able to think strategically and have strong negotiating and influencing skills.
Proactive identification of advanced gold mining / exploration opportunities through government and industry contacts, internet/database searches and conferences.
Priority ranking of opportunities with rapid rejections of marginal plays and field evaluations of priority targets. Involves extensive traveling in foreign jurisdictions.
Geological compilations, area selection, prospect evaluations and generation of exploration projects.
Assessments of country risk, land tenure, security, quality of resource/reserve estimates and upside exploration potential Interaction with Centerra personnel and providing technical support for other Centerra activities as required. Provide technical support for M&A initiatives.
2) Supervision Must have strong leadership, team-building, decision making skills and financial acumen, in addition to excellent communication skills, good interpersonal and negotiating skills in order to lead the regional exploration teams. Initiate, participate in and supervise due diligence evaluations on selected opportunities with support from other Centerra staff or outside consultants.
3) Reporting Concise, accurate, comprehensive and timely reporting of activities, results and budget status. Must be familiar with preparing annual budgets and adhering to them. Responsible for developing presentations, making recommendations and presenting them to others within Centerra.
4) Administration Manage and maintain an exploration office and staff in the region. Design and manage annual budgets and work plans consistent with the schedules and requirements of Centerra. Set annual goals and ensure that targets are met in a timely fashion.
Familiarity along with some experience working with property, confidentiality, joint venture and / or other standard industry agreements.
5) Database Management Acquire and maintain comprehensive databases with advanced gold opportunities in area of responsibility. Familiar with relevant computer software programs for generating reports and spreadsheets, plotting maps and making presentations. Working knowledge of MapInfo and Discover would be a strong asset.
6) Health and Safety Ensure compliance of exploration staff with the health and safety policies of Centerra.
The ideal candidate will possess: M. Sc. in Geology Have at least 15 years or more experience in an exploration/mining environment, with exposure to assessing advanced gold opportunities including experience with gold deposits in Asia Understanding of gold deposit models, resource estimation techniques, mining, and metallurgy Experience working in foreign countries, especially Asia Must be able to work effectively with multiple demands and time pressures. Proven leadership abilities Must have the ability and desire to advance to progressively higher positions within the organization Willingness to travel Computer and database management skills Superior communication and interpersonal skills Safety oriented approach to work Working knowledge of Russian or other Asian languages would be an asset.
