$70,049.77 – $91,471.43 annually plus 6% Recruitment and Retention Adjustment

The Mining Health, Safety and Enforcement Division (MHSE) are responsible for the health and safety, compliance management, audits and enforcement for the mineral exploration and mining sector in BC.

In 2019, MHSE created the Orphaned and Abandoned Mines Program (OAMP). British Columbia has a long history of mining and the OAMP is mandated to recognize and remediate liabilities that are the result of past mining activities that present potential risks to the environment and public health and safety where no responsible person or company exists to address these risks.

The position for Mine Engineer is responsible for the engineering program for the OAMP.  The position will oversee a diversity of engineering issues related to the closing of open holes and high hazard situations at orphaned, abandoned and historic mines including the portfolio of abandoned tailings storage facilities (TSF)for which the province has taken responsibility to ensure environmental and public safety concerns are addressed, consistent with the Ministry and other provincial policies, programs procedures, and legislative/regulatory requirements.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Registered or immediately eligible* for registration as a fully qualified Professional Engineer with the Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
  • *Note: Immediately eligible is defined as being registered as a professional in another Canadian jurisdiction and able to transfer that membership to a BC professional association within 6 months of employment. It is the responsibility of the applicant to have their qualifications reviewed by the appropriate body to ensure they have the necessary requirements for registration.
  • Degree in mining engineering, or closely related discipline
  • Minimum 7 years’ practical experience working as a mining engineer
