Deputy Chief Inspector, Health and Safety

Salary $100,000.03 – $125,000.00 annually

The Mining and Minerals Division is responsible for developing, promoting and regulating a thriving, globally competitive, safe and environmentally responsible mining industry, significantly benefiting all British Columbians.

The Deputy Chief Inspector of Mines, Health and Safety is Victoria based and reports to the Chief Inspector of Mines. The Deputy Chief Inspector leads the development and implementation of legislation, regulations and programs to protect the health and safety of workers and members of the public from risk factors associated with mine operations across the province.

The position provides expert advice and direction to Regional Operations Inspectors and Provincial Specialist Inspectors regarding health and safety issues. The Deputy Chief Inspector directly supervises provincial technical specialists in the occupational health, ergonomics, mechanical, electrical and emergency response disciplines for regulatory oversight of mine operations. The position is responsible for developing and implementing health and safety strategies and initiatives for health and safety Inspectors.

The role requires a strong understanding of the complex regulatory regimes applied to the mining industry in BC. The role requires a strong understanding of interactions with multiple stakeholders including local residents, First Nations, Mines Associations, environmental groups, other ministries and regulatory agencies, and other levels of government.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Relevant University degree, preference may be given to degrees in engineering, mining engineering, or geochemistry or occupational health and safety or similar degree.
  • Preference may be given to those who are registered or immediately* eligible for registration as a fully licensed Professional Engineer with Engineers and Geoscientists BC (The Association of Engineers and Geoscientists BC). *Immediately eligible means you are currently a fully licensed Professional Engineer in another Canadian jurisdiction and can be immediately transferred to Engineers and Geoscientists BC.
  • Preference may be given to those with education in project management.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years of experience in the mining operations or mine regulatory field. Preference may be given to those with 10 or more years of experience.
  • A minimum of five (5) years of supervisory experience in the mining industry. Preference may be given to those with 7 or more years of experience in this area.
  • Successful experience providing leadership to professional employees and working effectively with private companies, unions and associations.
  • Experience successfully building effective working relationships with a broad spectrum of natural resource sector stakeholders such as senior representatives of public/private sector, First Nations, and community/special interest groups, particularly in environments where parties have conflicting interests with potentially sensitive political/economic issues.
