British Columbia has a vibrant and growing exploration and mining industry that is supported by the BC Geological Survey through the generation and distribution of pre-competitive geoscience information and knowledge. The BC Geological Survey is British Columbia’s oldest scientific agency and is a branch of the Mines and Mineral Resources Division in the Ministry of Energy and Mines. The Survey is responsible for documenting, assessing and archiving the geology and related mineral and coal resources of the Province.  Accessing and visualizing over 100 years of geoscience data, with supporting web services, attracts and encourages investment from the mineral exploration and mining industry.

As Geomatics Geoscientist you will conduct scientific analytical studies of geoscience data to discover new spatial and thematic relationships between geoscience data elements and publish project results in reports, on maps and in digital databases.  As a skilled analyst, you conduct scientific examination of geoscience data related to geology, geochemistry, geophysics, remote sensing, mineral deposits, environmental impacts and other types of information.  You provide expert advice regarding the mineral potential of specific areas of the Province to support mineral exploration and government land-use planning and decision-making.  Employing expert communication skills and knowledge of geology and mineral deposits in British Columbia, and professional scientific standards, you provide assistance and formal training to industry and government clients on the Ministry geoscience databases and application dissemination tools.

As Geomatics Geoscientist, you will manage geoscience data sets, design and implement data models, apply data and schema conversion and transfer functions, and manage the evaluation, selection and implementation of appropriate tools, software, applications and systems.  You will work with a team to standardize spatial geoscience data management and deliver geoscience data through web services.

An effective leader, you guide project teams to develop strategies to stimulate industry mineral exploration, manage procurement processes for vendors and contractors and supervise junior professional employees.  The Geomatics Geoscientist works with industry, government and university partners to build collaborative projects to achieve maximum research value.

To be considered for this position your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have the following:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology and at least 5 years’ experience in mineral exploration-related geology or Master’s Degree in Geology with 3 years’ experience in mineral exploration-related geology.
