Ministry of Energy and Mines Inspector of Mines, Health and Safety

Salary $61,805.03 – $77,194.06 annually + plus $32.89 Bi-weekly Isolation Allowance for Smithers

3 positions available. Positions available in:  Smithers, Prince George and Kamloops (1 position in each location).

Play an advisory role in regional mine safety

The Mines and Mineral Resources Division (MMRD) manages and facilitates the responsible development of BC’s mineral resources.   MMRD’s main focuses are:  ensuring safe and environmentally responsible mineral exploration, mine development and closure; providing timely permitting decisions; promoting BC’s many mineral opportunities and fostering a positive and supportive environment for staff; implementing the  Jobs Plan commitments and contributing to the achievement of the Province’s social, economic and environmental goals.

The Inspector of Mines-Health and Safety is the ministry professional on mine safety and for ensuring compliance and enforcement of health and safety under the delegated authority of the Mines Act and the Health, Safety and Reclamation Code for Mines (HSR) in British Columbia.  The position conducts investigations, inspections, audits, enforces actions for health and safety non-compliance, and provides expert advice.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Degree or diploma in mining, minerals or related discipline from an accredited institution.
  • Registered, or immediately* eligible for registration as a fully licensed professional with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of BC (APEGBC). *Immediately eligible means you are a fully licensed professional member in good standing with the professional association as required by your specialty area in another Canadian jurisdiction and can immediately transfer to APEGBC. *If you do not meet this qualification please apply to the STO opportunity REQ 41770.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ experience in mining, construction or related industry.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with over 8 years of mining related experience with progressive responsibility at a senior mine engineer or manager level
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may also be considered.
  • Experience solving complex technical problems, interpreting and analyzing data related to mine safety management.
  • Experience in sub-surface investigations, construction and/or operation of mines or related works and other aspects of mine safety hazard management.
