Scope of work:
JS Redpath will be the primary contractor on an underground mine development project located on the east coast of Labrador, approximately 350 km north of Goose Bay. The existing open pit operation is expected to be exhausted by 2022. Future mining from the two separate underground deposits will extend the life of this operation for at least another decade. Both deposits contain Nickel and Copper and at peak production, 2.54 million tons will be mined annually.
Phase one of the project consists of over 8,000 meters of ramp and lateral development; approximately 1.25 million tons of waste rock haulage and the construction of temporary facilities on surface as well as the dewatering and ventilation infrastructure.
The primary role of the Lead Construction Miner is to complete assigned construction tasks efficiently with little to no supervision. The incumbent will provide guidance and mentoring to less experienced miners. The role will coordinate activities closely with the Mine Development team.
Tasks assigned include the setup surface construction trailers, mobile equipment shop, ventilation fans and heaters, process water system and tie-in’s to services. Construction of the underground de-watering system, ventilation doors, refuge stations and mine services. The development contract at Voisey’s Bay has growth potential and way be extended to include the construction of the ore flow system.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Inspect existing underground headings to ensure the workplace is safe and assigned construction tasks can be executed safely and to design specifications.
Mentor and provide leadership to Construction Miner and Construction Labourer team members
Use of scaling bars, pneumatic hand-held drills, cutting and welding equipment, rubber-tired underground mobile equipment such as LHD (Load-Haul-Dump) units, scissor trucks, boom truck, shotcrete sprayers and other support vehicles in a confined environment
Complete shift end reports and red ink prints to ‘as built’ status

Required Skills and Qualifications:
Ontario Hard Rock Underground Common Core – Full Basic (or other provincial equivalent) (preferred)
Required Specialty Modules: U0085, U0085c & U0086 (or other provincial equivalent) (preferred)
High School Diploma or equivalent (preferred)
Basic literacy (read, write, basic math and read blue prints) required
2 years as construction worker prior to advancement to lead hand
5 years’ experience in an underground mining environment
CWB Certified (preferre)
Must understand responsibilities of leadership
Ability to read civil prints
Basic understanding of mine regulations pertaining to task
Ability to conduct risk assessment of specific task
Understanding of work related procedures and standards
Ability to recognize and resolve problems as required
Ability to adapt to a varying work environment often requiring the employee to develop new and innovative work methods
Strong leadership skills
Strong organizational skills
Health and Safety:
Have the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
Follow Company and Client health and safety standards and report all unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor
Responsible for the use and maintenance of all safety equipment, i.e. PPE, lanyards, warning signs and labeling, according to company rules and applicable legislation.
Ensure permits are in place and lock 0ut tag out procedures are followed
Responsible to ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
Ensure that workers are qualified and capable to safely performing the assigned work
Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to effectively use an MSDS sheet
