Mechanical Design Engineer

We are seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer (P.Eng) with a minimum of five to 10 years’ experience in design of heavy duty steel and aluminium equipment and structures, preferably in relation to the underground mining industry. Preference will be given to a professionally licensed engineer as much of the equipment designed for underground mining must be certified by a registered, professional engineer and load certificates issued.
The Design Engineer position requires strong skills in static and dynamic stress analysis, mechanics of materials, strong SolidWorks modelling skills, experience with large steel and aluminium welded and bolted fabrications, and design creativity. The individual should be driven by a passion for mechanical design work involving size and weight constraints. Knowledge of underground mining operations and the mining industry are important factors.
Experience in sectors engaged with large material handling equipment, machinery involving material transport or mining machines, crane companies, and other manufacturing sectors involving heavy steel weldments/fabrications and abrasive applications generally equip individuals with a relatively good understanding and level of skill in dealing with our design requirements. Experience and knowledge of mechanics of materials and demonstrated capability in structural/stress/fatigue analysis for static and dynamic loading of heavy equipment structures, bolted and welded connections is fundamental to this position. Familiarity with hydraulic and pneumatic design is considered an asset.
Strong communications skills are essential. The individual must be self-motivated but also have the ability to work within a team environment and be able to share/transfer knowledge to/from other departments. Strong skills in using SolidWorks, knowledge of STAAD and competency in using FEA (eg. SolidWorks Simulation) is required. Knowledge of CSA W59, CSA S16-1 and CSA S157 is an asset. Ability to multi-task, meet tight project deadlines and manage time well are very important. Willingness to travel to a limited extent may be required in this role.
