Empire State Mines, located in the historic Balmat Zinc District in St. Lawrence County, New York, is recruiting a Mine Geologist to assist with the day to day operations that include underground mapping and ore control, a diamond drill program, and resource modeling.  Management seeks a motivated professional that supports a diverse work culture, engages fellow employees across departmental boundaries, and fosters cooperation and innovation in a team environment.  The successful candidate will be expected to demonstrate strong safety leadership and to support the company’s commitment to operational excellence.

Essential job duties include:

  • Perform geologic activities essential to production, development, and/or exploration programs in support the mine, including geologic mapping, daily drill rig visits, geologic computer modeling (GIS, Vulcan, etc.)
  • Compile raw data into reports for review by senior management and/or regulatory agencies
  • Collect, compile and analyze production, development, and exploration data and results
  • Collect geochemical samples according to defined best practices, including collection and recording of field observations
  • Perform data entry and database management functions as necessary
  • Perform field sample preparation and shipping, as instructed
  • Analyze and interpret geochemical data resulting in report
  • Construct maps, diagrams and sections

  • A BS degree in Geology or Geological Engineering with 2-5 years of industry experience in a mining or exploration environment
  • Able to work in the United States
  • Proficient with industry software including Vulcan, Leapfrog, and ArcGIS.  Access programming ability is highly desirable.  MS Office suite (Excel, Word, Power Point) skills required
  • Ability to describe basic rock types and alteration, geologic mapping skills, and geologic observation skills
  • Will work in mines, project sites, and/or exploration environments where conditions may be primitive and/or harsh at times. (surface or underground environments, hot to cold, rough terrain, long distance and/or time to advanced medical care.)
  • Requires the ability to lift and carry core boxes and/or samples (up to 50 lbs)
  • Must be able to hold/operate a phone and radio with sufficient voice and hearing to carry on a conversation
  • Must be able to operate a manual transmission tractor or 4×4 light vehicle
