Mineral Assessment Geoscientist
$62,983.74 – $78,666.02 annually

The Mines and Mineral Resources Division is responsible for developing and regulating the thriving, globally competitive, safe, and environmentally responsible exploration and mining sector, significantly benefitting all British Columbians.

The British Columbia Geological Survey (BCGS) links government, the minerals industry, and communities to the province’s geology and mineral resources. The BCGS generates, disseminates, and archives British Columbia’s geoscience data to stimulate investment and provide knowledge to society’s decision makers for responsible land and resource management. The BCGS is a leader in public government geoscience, providing geological and geomorphological information to all through traditional reports, maps, and databases, which can be freely accessed online.

The Mineral Assessment Geoscientist is responsible for the province’s collection of assessment reports. This position applies complex technical understanding of a variety of geological, geophysical, geochemical, mineral, coal, and placer exploration techniques to makes professional judgments on the suitability of the work and its costs reported by industry Professionals and prospectors as required by the Mineral Tenure Act in order to maintain tenure in good standing. The position ensures the assessment reports are in compliance with statutory requirements and decides whether reports submitted are accepted, rejected or returned for revisions. The Mineral Assessment Geoscientist reviews, manages, and compiles assessment reports and their associated digital data, and contribute to geological and mineral resources related analyses of the content of the reports. The position provides expert geoscience data advice to, and engages with government, industry, communities and the public.

Qualifications for this role include:

  • Registered or eligible for immediate registration as a fully qualified Professional Geoscientist with the Engineers & Geoscientists of British Columbia (EGBC).
  • Bachelor’s degree in Geology and at least 5 years’ experience in mineral exploration-related geology or Master’s Degree in Geology with 3 years’ experience in mineral exploration-related geology.
  • Experience in geological mapping, mineral exploration or mining in British Columbia.
  • Experience supervising contractors and managing projects.
  • Experience using GIS and spatial database management software (e.g., Manifold, ArcGIS, Mapinfo, FME, SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL/PostGIS).
  • Experience with computer graphics, web applications and office productivity software (e.g. CorelDRAW, Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office, etc.).
  • Experience in publishing and presenting geoscientific results to technical and non-technical audiences.
