Scope of work:
JS Redpath will be the primary contractor on an underground mine development project located on the east coast of Labrador, approximately 350 km north of Goose Bay. The existing open pit operation is expected to be exhausted by 2022. Future mining from the two separate underground deposits will extend the life of this operation for at least another decade. Both deposits contain Nickel and Copper and at peak production, 2.54 million tons will be mined annually.
Phase one of the project consists of over 8,000 meters of ramp and lateral development; approximately 1.25 million tons of waste rock haulage and the construction of temporary facilities on surface as well as the dewatering and ventilation infrastructure.
The Mandate of the Safety Supervisor is to provide the necessary resources and support required to enable field personnel to meet all Redpath, Client and legislative requirements relating to Health and Safety in the workplace.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conduct workplace inspections and Redpath Safety Program audits
Participate in project Risk Assessments
Participate in new project safety start-up planning
Aid in the development and implementation of standard operating procedures.
Advise senior management on matters relating to health and safety Develop, implement and support a site specific Safety Plan;
Assist the Project Manager in ensuring the investigation of all reportable incidents is conducted in accordance with project, legal and Contractor requirements;
Maintains contractor HSE statistics; and
Submits weekly and monthly safety reports.
Required Skills and Qualifications:

FMTM (Quebec Common Core)
Diploma/Certificate in Safety, Occupational Health, Industrial Hygiene or related field
- Minimum 5 years working in an underground mine with direct involvement in an established safety system ideally as a Supervisor, Foreman, etc.
- Experience conducting and reporting incident/accident investigations
Effective leadership, communication (written and verbal), facilitation and teambuilding skills in support of excellent client relations.
Computer application and MS Office proficiency
Advanced understanding of mine regulations
Ability to conduct risk assessments
Ability to write work related procedures and standards
Ability to recognize and resolve problems as required
Ability to adapt to a varying work environment often requiring the employee to develop new and innovative work methods
Strong organizational skills
Health and Safety:
Have the authority and responsibility to maintain a safe and efficient working environment
Follow Company and Client health and safety standards and report all unsafe acts or conditions to supervisor
Responsible for the use and maintenance of all safety equipment, i.e. PPE, lanyards, warning signs and labeling, according to company rules and applicable legislation.
Ensure permits are in place and lock 0ut tag out procedures are followed
Responsible to ensure proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment.
Ensure that workers are qualified and capable to safely performing the assigned work
Must have knowledge of the WHMIS legislation and know how to effectively use an MSDS sheet.
