Senior Minerals Geologist [Base Metal Metallogeny]
$67,495.11 – $84,301.57 annually

The Mines and Mineral Resources Division is responsible for developing and regulating the thriving, globally competitive, safe, and environmentally responsible exploration and mining sector, significantly benefitting all British Columbians.

The Senior Minerals Geologist (Base Metal Metallogeny) provides the Province with expertise on the geology of sediment- and volcanic-hosted, stratiform and stratabound Pb, Zn, Au and Ag deposits in British Columbia. The position is responsible for conducting regional bedrock mapping programs, investigating mineral deposits and evaluating the mineral potential. The Senior Minerals Geologist also gathers knowledge through interaction with companies, geologists and prospectors, and collaboration with other geoscientists from universities and government agencies. The position identifies target project areas, collects and interprets data and publishes results. The position is a lead on developing geoscientific projects and conducting field- and laboratory-based studies that advance knowledge of the Province’s base metal endowment. Contribution to the broader geoscience community is an expectation and may entail the publication of external papers, review of journal manuscripts, participation in professional organizations, and delivering scientific lectures.

Qualifications for this role include:

Graduation from a university with a post-graduate degree in geology, geological engineering or equivalent qualifications (preferably a Ph.D)

Registered or eligible for immediate registration as a fully qualified Professional Geoscientist with Engineers & Geoscientists British Columbia

Minimum of five years relevant professional experience in mineral exploration, mining geology or public sector geoscience (e.g. government)

Experience with, and knowledge of:

  • Field-based regional bedrock mapping
  • Geology and economic geology, especially base metal metallogeny and related deposit types
  • Geology and mineral potential, especially base metal deposits of the Canadian Cordillera
  • Sedimentology, stratigraphy and geochemistry related to VMS, MVT and SEDEX deposits
  • Leading field projects in remote and rugged terrain for extended periods of time
  • Research procedures and modern analytical techniques applicable to the position and relevant to mineral exploration
  • Publishing geoscientific data in peer-reviewed and government literature
  • Presenting geoscientific results to technical and non-technical audiences
