UDS Project Manager (2019-3515)

Job Description

Redpath Mongolia LLC has an immediate opening for UDS Project Manager to join their dynamic team at the Oyu Tolgoi Project in Mongolia. Situated in the southern Gobi desert of Mongolia, approximately 550 kilometers south of the capital, Ulaanbaatar and 80 kilometers north of the Mongolia-China border, Oyu Tolgoi is jointly owned by the Government of Mongolia and Turquoise Hill Resources. Since 2010, Rio Tinto has also been the manager of the Oyu Tolgoi project. Oyu Tolgoi is one of the most exciting developments in copper and gold mining for several decades. It contains reserves and resources that make it one of the world’s largest known copper and gold deposits. The project is expected to be a significant contributor to Mongolia’s development.

Closing: March 26, 2019

Location: Oyu Tolgoi Mine Site

Rotation: 4 weeks on, 2 weeks off

Shift Length: 12 hours

Job Description:


The UDS Project Manager is accountable to the Site General Manager for the safe, efficient, legally compliant and profitable operation of the underground operations at Shaft #1 that are related to lateral development together with the associated staff and facilities.


The incumbent will provide leadership, development, and direction to his/her staff to ensure that the business objectives of Mongolia including safety, health, quality and profitability are consistently achieved.


Roles and Responsibilities:


  • Monitor and proactively implement change to ensure that the project is achieving Zero Harm

  • Oversee the development, implementation, and maintenance of project baselines and project execution plans, inclusive of managing the setup of project administrative aspects

  • Propose and implement authorized operating and capital expenditure strategies that will enhance the financial position of the project

  • Provide leadership, development and direction to subordinate staff members to drive productivity improvement within the team, optimise resource utilization to achieve more with less, and ensure that the stretch business objectives of the UDS Project are consistently achieved

  • Review, interview, and hire subordinate senior leadership team members

  • Review and determine project schedules with collaboration with the Client representatives, manpower budget, cost budget, and cost control with Engineering

  • Liaise effectively with Client representatives as well as other contracting companies’ personnel

  • Conduct periodic reporting and interactions with local and national government officials to ensure compliance to regulations

  • Excellent understanding of all underground mining cycles involved in lateral development, mass excavations, and vertical development. This includes equipment, personnel, and schedule


Required Skills and Qualifications:



  • 5-10 years of project management / controls experience in mining, shaft sinking, lateral development, or similar underground construction projects with a sound knowledge of contract principles and data manipulation into management information.

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mining Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or similar discipline from an accredited university

  • Project Management Certificate or similar certification is an asset

  • Able to interface with all cultures and levels of management and employees

  • Knowledge of business analytics, process mapping, and the ability to understand and implement effective workflows

  • Sound project management, planning and organisational skills, and able to manage competing priorities

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Microsoft Office suite of products, in particular Outlook, Word, Excel, and Visio
