Scope of work:


Innu Inuit Redpath Limited Partnership (IIR) will be the primary contractor on an underground mine development project located on the east coast of Labrador, approximately 350 km north of Goose Bay. The existing open pit operation is expected to be exhausted by 2022. Future mining from the two separate underground deposits will extend the life of this operation for at least another decade. Both deposits contain Nickel and Copper and at peak production, 2.54 million tons will be mined annually


Job Summary:

Under the supervision of the Mechanical Supervisor and/or Underground Superintendent, the primary role of the Mechanical Helper is to assist the Underground Heavy Duty Equipment Mechanic or Lead Mechanic in the preventative maintenance and repairs to diesel, electrical, hydraulic and air operated equipment. This includes mobile equipment, hoists, compressors, drills, small tools and miscellaneous equipment of a similar nature


Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Must be able to comprehend written and verbal instructions as required to perform his duties in a safe and efficient manner
  • Must be able to follow proper procedure to ensure safety and to control equipment damage
  • Assist with diagnostic testing to identify problems and determine the solution to solve the problem
  • Assist with equipment and repair or replace defective parts, components or systems.
  • Assist with testing repaired equipment for proper performance and to ensure that work meets manufacturer specifications.
  • Comply with all Redpath and Owners safety regulations and procedures.
  • Identify unsafe conditions in underground headings - high level of alertness required
  • Perform safely and timely emergency repairs to equipment
  • Must be able to follow proper procedure to ensure safety and to control equipment damage

Required Skills and Qualifications:



Required: High School Diploma, in progress to obtain Journeyperson certification

Preferred: College level education, in progress to obtain Journeyperson certification 

Work Experience:

Required: 3-6 months’ experience, possibly from co-op placements

Preferred: 1-2 years’ experience in Heavy Duty mobile equipment maintenance applications

Knowledge Required:

  • Able to deliver effective results, meet tight deadlines, and targets
  • Basic knowledge of Hydraulic and electrical schematics
  • Basic knowledge of Engine/Powertrain Diagnostic Software, both handheld and computer based
  • Ability to use parts and service manuals, make parts list for repairs
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication and customer service skills, both verbal and written
  • Technical/mechanical knowledge of heavy equipment as related to mining
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation, regulations
  • High level of attention to detail, neatness and accuracy
  • Effective and creative thinker and problem solver
  • Strong analytical skills
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively


Health and Safety:

  • Following Company health and safety standards and reporting any unsafe acts or conditions to Supervisor
  • Practice proper use and maintenance of personal protective equipment
  • Work in accordance with local legislation
