Compass Minerals is a leading producer of minerals, including salt, sulfate of potash specialty fertilizer and magnesium chloride. We currently have a vacancy for a permanent full time Vice President of Operations as described below at our Goderich Mine.

Main Duties / Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Senior Vice President of Operations for Compass Minerals, the Vice President of Operations is responsible for the overall direction and guidance of the Goderich operations including the production units, administrative support functions, engineering and maintenance support as well as Great Lakes vessel loading operations. The individual is also responsible for developing and implementing strategic plans to obtain objectives in safety performance, environmental compliance, regulatory compliance, and quality performance.

Specific responsibilities and duties will include:

  • The VP of Operations is accountable for the operation and maintenance of all underground and surface production, maintenance, processing and loading facilities in a safe and cost efficient manner, to achieve or exceed established production incentives
  • The VP of Operations is accountable for the overall leadership and management of all operations aspects of the Goderich operation, the world’s largest rock salt mine, which will include operations, technical services and deep-water port and distribution work
  • The VP of Operations ensures a safe working environment, being a visible leader for safety and environment to employees, contractors, and the community
  • Developing and recommending production strategies, together with capital budget and operating budget requirements, to optimize short and long-range production capabilities while minimizing exposure to economic and environmental risks.
  • Ensuring the successful integration with an operation of new mining and production capabilities in order to provide the necessary additional capacity to contribute to the overall achievement of Compass Minerals’ production objectives
  • Mentoring, coaching and directing operational staff through the establishment of stretch goals and cohesive teamwork with a participatory and inclusive leadership style is essential, and utilizing collaborative leadership strengths to foster positive cultural change and inclusive, team-oriented success.

Required Professional Experience / Skills:

  • The VP of operations will be a technically sound mining operations executive with approximately 20 years in senior operating roles in mining operations (preferably underground)
  • Must have significant experience working with organized labour and a proven track record in creating collaborative and engaging relationship with union leadership
  • Some experience with continuous mining, drilling, blasting, haulage and rock mechanics will be highly advantageous
  • A proven track record of driving best practices, improving productivity and profitability throughout operations. Experience with “Six Sigma”, “Lean”, or other continuous improvement methods will be a plus
  • Excellent Occupational Health & Safety record and an astute operator with re-engineering ability and committed to continuous improvement; hands-on, knows all aspects of the business; tough minded and experienced
  • Demonstrable success in revitalizing teams, establishing positive relationships with local communities, and in driving organizational and cultural change in an ideally similar unionized environments
  • A builder and lead of high-performance management teams focused on the cost-effective use of resources and optimized profit contribution while also establishing the performance standards and organizational culture for the mine

Required Education:

  • University degree in mining or engineering preferred;
  • Masters degree in related field an asset
